Living well when someone we love has dementia: David and Joan contributed their story about living well with dementia to my book Love Still Lives Here about a year ago. Yesterday, nearly one year after my original blog about them (3/14/17!) I spent the afternoon visiting with Joan and their son Kristan who had very interesting insight from the adult child's perspective. Enjoy!Read more

Love Still Lives Here- My Kickstarter Campaign
I'm getting ready to launch my Kickstarter Campaign called Love Still Lives Here. Last week, my friend and colleague Alice with Forever Lola Photography videotaped my interview which will be part of the trailer for my Kickstarter Campaign. You may have seen some posts about this project, Love Still Lives Here.
That means I'll have a video taped trailer to share my message and ask for donations to help fund my project. Love Still Lives Here is a book about people impacted by dementia. It's a POSITIVE, BEAUTIFUL project about love and devotion.
LOVE STILL LIVES HERE-HOW IT CAME ABOUT
After 37 years as a nurse and 16 of those as a nurse practitioner, I heard the most beautiful stories and thought to myself- these ARE the stories that MUST be told. So, I left a great career to tell those stories in a book and share the messages with the world. I'm a storyteller- photographer, author and speaker. Once I knew what I wanted to do, I fine tuned my photography and interviewed, and learned about business and.... Love Still Lives Here will have 8-12 interviews with several beautiful images of each family.
Why Kickstarter for Me?
I'm looking to Kickstarter to help me finish the book, purchase assistance with editing and gift photos and copies of the book to the families. I'm also building a platform to get the word out about this project.
What is Kickstarter?
What is Kickstarter you ask?
According to Kickstarter.com: 'Kickstarter is an enormous global community built around creativity and creative projects. Over 10 million people, from every continent on earth, have backed a Kickstarter project.
Some of those projects come from influential artists like De La Soul or Marina Abramović. Most come from amazing creative people you probably haven’t heard of.
Every artist, filmmaker, designer, developer, and creator on Kickstarter has complete creative control over their work — and the opportunity to share it with a vibrant community of backers.'
What Does Kickstarter Do for Creatives?
According to Kickstarter website: Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects-big and small- have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.
Kickstarter was built to help bring creative projects to life. They measure their success as a company by how well the mission is achieved and not by the size of their profits. That’s why, in 2015, they became a Benefit Corporation. A benefit Corporations are for-profit companies that are obligated to consider the impact of their decisions on society, not only shareholders. Radically, positive impact on society becomes part of a Benefit Corporation’s legally defined goals.
Watch for MY KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN and consider donating to my project. There will be options to donate as little as 5$ on up. You'll get something in return (other than knowing you've done something wonderful!), so please watch and donate. It will open for 3 weeks and I must reach my goal to receive any of the funds. It's all or nothing with Kickstarter.

So, I set out to do a family photo session this week-end. It wasn't your typical family photo session because it involved a pig named Daisy and 2 lovely, furry bunnies. I knew the Cavanaugh family was special, but what I didn't know was that I would get to experience an absolutely genuinely fun, beautiful family too! We did the Family session at their home because, well frankly, how do you take a pig on a field trip? Plus, pictures in the privacy and intimacy of your own home carry special meaning. These pics were taken between the moments with Daisy. Good luck getting a pig to pose, but stay tuned...

Family Lifestyle Portraits
I've talked about 'lifestyle photography' before, and this is an example of that kind of a shoot. Some of the shoot was posed, but the expressions were priceless and all their own. I captured some moments between the moments and got those goosebumps (brush with the divine) that I yearn for. When I get goosebumps, I know I'm in the midst of something truly special. So I was!
Family Photo Sessions- What Moments Matter the Most?
What moments matter the most? Those moments between the moments where the personalities shine through. I've found that the still images are incredible for this and to even add more BAM, I create a video/slide show. The video portions are quick snippets but they capture some of the movement and love that still images simply cannot. It's a blend of the best of two worlds. Add music and you've got memories that go on and on. My husband Tim Buck was kind enough to get some video footage for me so this video is definitely a behind the scenes because it shows a little bit of me. It is a memory of a wonderful afternoon family photo session for the Cavanaugh family and for me! It might be the best part, so be sure and take a look and leave a comment for this beautiful family! Oh and PS- Daisy was relatively cooperative, sweet and you'll just have to see for yourself how the posing went...
My Favorite Behind the Scenes of 3 Generations of Beauty!
Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers and especially to my own wonderful mother!
We had so much fun photographing and video taping this family, that we opted to do a few more with their horses. The girls love the horses and so- why not? I'm so glad we did because it was probably the highlight of the session.
You can have your family photos uniquely yours also. This family opted to have video with some behind the scenes along with their portrait images. These images will mean more and more to them with each passing year.
Family sessions begin at $200 for sitting fee.
Don't wait to get your family photos done!
Because there's always MORE to the story...here's a little video/slideshow with some behind the scenes.
You'll feel the love and joy in this family. I've started integrating a little behind the scenes video and love capturing some of the fun between the poses. What happens next? This family has beautiful portraits that will mean more to them with each passing year. They have beautiful images to hang on the walls and desks. They also have a meaningful portrait video showing things that still images miss. It's easy to share with their friends and families. PERFECTION! You can get yours, also. Dot and her daughters are contributors to my upcoming book, Love Still Lives Here.
I was blessed to meet with Dot and her 3 lovely daughters, Donna, Delaney and Delinda. What beautiful stories they had to tell about growing up and growing older with their mother. We chat. We took pictures. We laughed. We laughed a lot.
I look for themes in the stories of families caring for their loved with dementia. Dot's family had so much to share and as always, I learned a lot about life. Dot has done relatively well with her dementia and her daughter's recognized that there could be personality changes that are sometimes for the worse. They feel very fortunate that Dot has, in fact, become more pleasant as her dementia has progressed. Sundowning is a problem, but all has been manageable and they feel their mother is content. What a gift!
This has given them hope believing that perhaps aging isn't as scary as it might have been had they not witnessed their mother's graceful walk into old age. Dot is 85, thought she certainly looks younger!
These ladies have love and joy and laughter. An afternoon with them was pure joy. Don't you see it in their faces?
The expected publication date for my book, Love Still Lives Here is September 2016. You will learn more about this admirable family and walk away with a sense of awe. Their stories ARE about HOPE, LOVE and BEING BETTER EVERY DAY! Be sure and 'like' my Facebook page (Carmen Buck Photography), follow me on Instagram @CarmenBuckPhoto and Twitter @CBuckPhoto
I am so thrilled to tell you more about Dot. You know this blog post is just a super short version, right? Her daughters shared beautiful stories about Dot before she had dementia, once she was diagnosed and now. The love and humor are so evident in the images, but you know I can't show those until the book is out! Love Still Lives Here will be published by November, 2016. At it's core, Love Still Lives Here is a book about the love in families and people with dementia. After years of being in reverence of families caring for loved ones with dementia, I realized these stories of LOVE and DEVOTION need to be shared with the world. These are the stories so rarely heard. Love Still Lives Here is about the many expressions of love and will certainly entertain, inspire and open your heart.
Elder Remembrance Photography
In my 37+ year nursing career, I often cared for elders who had no recent photos. It wasn't unusual to see people in their 80s whose most recent photos were from their 40s and 50s. When did our later years become a time not worthy of being memorialized? Sure, elders aren't smoothed skinned anymore, but there is still that light, that smile, that expression that is so uniquely them. Elder remembrance photography is about honoring our later years, and recognizing the beauty that is still there. It's about seeing the love that families have for one another-even within the mundane everyday stuff. It's my mission to bring Elder Remembrance Photography to life! Watch for E-Books with simple tips about how to take great photos. Add some stories about your loved one and you've got magic! Sign up to get updates!
And Happy we were! We planned a photo shoot to honor mothers and daughters. We gathered a wonderful team. We got some balloons for a beautiful little girl to run around with. We let life unfold and had a blast.

What Do I (we) Wear?
Let me assure you that you won't need to buy new clothes unless you just want to. Clothing for a photoshoot is about coordinating, accessorizing, avoiding large patterns and looking cohesive. Let's break these down.
I bet when you think of family pictures, you envision write or black shirts and jeans for every family member. Well, while you can do that, I prefer to see family (and this goes for Mother's Day Shoots) to coordinate but NOT MATCH. A color pallet will give some interest and variety to your family portraits. I found a nice image on Pinterest that shoes some color palettes for you. Choosing a palette while having some variety with the clothing items also gives opportunity for your family to express their own individuality. For instance, one member may like a button down shirt, while one may choose a different style, but so long as the colors coordinate they'll look great!
Some Popular Color Palettes
Patterns can be okay if small and not overpowering. The focus of the images should be about YOU. Think about the color palette and coordinate with the other colors. Neutrals with splashes of colors here and there and patterns can look fabulous. Patterns in scarves for women can be nice too.
I recommend avoiding shirts that have characters or logos. When my son was little he loved the Ninja Turtles. I cherish the pictures I have of him in his favorite Ts. So, if you want a few pics with that special character shirt, I think that is just fine. I would avoid having that cute T in all the photos though.
Coco Chanel also told us that once we felt all ready to go with our clothes, accessories... to take one thing off. We'll keep it simple! For some portraits, the jewelry is big, flashy and fun. For most portraits, we go for simple and elegant. If you have something that is important to you (a special necklace, earrings...) then bring them! I suggest bringing a few different items that can be interchanged. I also have lots of interesting items that don't look like much on my clothing stand BUT look incredible in photos. We are there to help you figure this out so don't worry.
What the heck does that mean? Cohesion in fashion basically means that all in the photo look like they belong together. For instance, you may choose a lovely vintage dress and your teenage daughter wants a dash of grunge with her mini skirt. This would NOT be a cohesive look. However, if your vintage dress has lace and we add some flowers in the hair and your daughter has a lace mini dress with soft makeup, this could work. Do you need to know about this? NO! You've got a team there for you! i will give you lots of guidance and Duane Sevelin is an international makeup artist who has very special talents in styling. He stays throughout the shoot for touchups. Some of our favorite looks have been those we decide about in the middle of a shoot. We are a team to help you and make sure everyone is happy.
Hair and Makeup
Most people do not get professional images done often. In fact, I see many people who tell me that they've never taken professional pictures with their loved ones. Why not make it the experience it deserves. The images you take home will be the spark for memories for generations and will last as family heirlooms forever. Do it right.
I highly recommend hair and makeup for most photo shoots. I work with a fabulous team of professionals that simply enhance your beauty. We sometimes think that hair and makeup artists will make us someone we are not. We will get asked for that and happily accommodate, but for the most part, the makeup is to enhance what you've already got. Skin smoothing and color is very important whether we photograph under studio lights OR natural light. I work with Duane Sevelin with Sevelin Global who has his own cosmetic line and is an international makeup artist. We are so blessed to have him to be a part of this team!
Before Your Shoot
We will have a chance to talk on the phone or video (FaceTime, Skype...) and email so you'll feel as prepared as possible. You may not feel totally comfortable until we get going in the shoot, but this is completely typical.
What More PERFECT gift than something that lasts FOREVER?
- Give the gift of memories for someone you love and her family
- Let her be the QUEEN for the day with pampering, primping and beautiful images to enjoy
Don't Wait- Call & Book your Photoshoot before the slots get filled
Mother's Day is the time in May where we often wonder what to do for our Moms, wives, sisters, friends and special mothers we know. We want to give some thing of value that lasts. Often we'll take them out somewhere special because those memories last. We may not remember details, but we'll remember how we felt with those we love...for a little while.
My favorite gifts always involve photos. You might expect that given my profession, BUT I've given beautifully housed images in frames, on canvas and so on... Why? They remind us of feelings and they remind us EVERY TIME we look at the photo. What could be better!
Why not give the gift of images AND a day of pampering with a unique experience to the woman or women you love. The photoshoots are fun and can include full hair and makeup and styling. Here is an example of 3 generations in a shoot.
This video tells you about Marcy and her mother Sandy and her daughter Taylor. Marcy is one of the hardest working people I know and totally deserved some pampering fun. Marcy told me that she had no formal pictures with her with her mother. I love photographing multiple age groups and women of a 'certain age.' Heck, I'm a 'woman of a certain age.' Aren't they beautiful?
