One of the most wonderful things about being a photographer is that I get to witness history in the making AND document it. Check out the beginnings of I Am Empowered Woman! It is only the beginning for this incredible group.Read more
I have a son, who is my heart. He is a wonderful young man, daring and loving and strong and kind. he is a loving husband-a loving man who wants to be his best. He is an Iraq War Veteran of the US Army Infantry. He has been home nearly 10 years and continues to heal. The Lone Survivor Foundation has been a HUGE help. He had the opportunity to spent time at the retreat center with his friends and also with his wife. We are all eternally grateful.Read more
As a photographer who enjoys photographing events, I’ve attended and photographed several events over the last few months. I’ve also been to retreats before, but I’m not sure I ever felt such a warm, loving welcome. I was the photographer for the Rise Up Women's retreat, but I was also embraced as a participant. This may have been a distraction for me or resulted in fewer or less impactful images. Nothing could be further from the truth. The comfort level of this warm welcoming group of beautiful women was such that I think I was able to capture much more raw, intimate photographs. I’m grateful for autofocus because my eyes teared up more than a few times! I saw things that I wouldn’t have been able to witness had I not been looking through my camera lens.
This conference was about bringing God and spirituality into our business in the ways we interact with others, how we make decisions and what we actually do to follow our hearts AND prosper. No easy task! Red Corral Ranch in Wimberley TX was the setting. Beautiful!!!
Bea Baylor is the founder of this conference and has a mission to inspire women and help them reach their potential and purpose through teaching, conferences, workshops, networking and building one business at a time. Bea also founded Baylor's Business Consulting Enterprise LLC. This online business institute provides training and education to help small business owners, coaches and leaders with strategies and business development skills to increase knowledge and become more profitable in their business. Leading women on an awesome and delightful journey of healing, seeking, finding and growing in Christ is her true calling. You'll see Bea in the video on this blog post.
I met Bea not quite a year ago. So much has happened since then! We met for coffee to talk about business things. I learned that she's a nurse also. We both whipped out our composition books to take notes. Old school can be good! I was still working full time in my job with plans to make changes and do more photography. She needed headshot and I needed to practice. It was a win-win and more than that- we really liked each other. Since then, Bea has introduced me to people and organizations and impacted my career in big ways. I hope I have given her as much. She is a dear friend of mine. Nothing has quite compared to the experience I had at the Rise Up conference. Nothing quite compares to Bea Baylor either!
Some of you might not know that spirituality and health was the basis of my thesis work yet, like many of us, I struggle to find and keep that meaning and purpose in life because I get caught up in the doing of the things. I’m still having a hard time thinking about what I really want to do. Speak, write, photograph- all the above? (More about the Shiny Penny syndrome in a future blog post) The conference and the speakers were incredibly inspiring and gave me some great info! The topics were meaningful for me because I run my business with heart and soul and hearing others talk about their successes and challenges was perfect. We are more alike than different! The first day, Bea pointed out with a giggle that I was the only ‘white girl amongst black girls for a while anyway.’ Well, to be honest, I hadn’t noticed. I saw beautiful, warm, kind women. After one particular incredible evening with Dr. Brenda Cherry, I was asked if I had ever been to a ‘Black Church’ before. Nope, and it blew my mind- in a good way. There are so many ways to worship and honor one another. I loved the freedom to be myself in a nonjudgemental environment. I watched women openly weep, pray, hug, and support each other in ways we so often don't get to witness in our lives. Oh, but shouldn't we? Isn't that what makes life rich? Surrender seemed to be the word for me. Surrender to follow my own path. I speak with women every day who want to figure out what path to take and then figure out how to follow it. Future blog post…
There is so much I could say about this conference. There is so much I can about the loving women I spent the week-end with. I will write more about the speakers in future blogs. You won't want to miss this- as you probably already have already guessed, the women are incredibly interesting!
The Red Corral Ranch has a most beautiful labyrinth built by the owners’ son as a thank you to his mother after she nursed him back to health following a serious surgery. I’ll write a longer post about this, but suffice to say it was incredibly moving. I photographed the experience the whole time, having already taken some time to walk the labyrinth in meditation by myself the day before. You’ve probably already guessed, but that’s another blog post. Meanwhile- enjoy the beautiful video to see the fireside surrender, our special banquet, the speakers, Shalia Anderson's Praise Dance and so much more. PLEASE LEAVE US YOUR COMMENTS
My husband and I headed to Pedernales Falls State Park and it was beautiful! We've had some rainy weather so the water was flowing. We climbed rocks, enjoyed some wild flowers and my husband enjoyed his Personal Portrait Assistive Device (AKA-Selfie Stick).
It's important to capture some memories and find a good way to save them. Taking pics on your phone is not a bad thing and there are some nifty lenses you can get to add to your smart phone. Be sure and keep them in a safe manner. It would be a shame to lose those happy memories.
Part of Carmen Buck Photography’s mission is to provide creative services and community outreach. (Read more about my Mission Statement HERE) I have chosen to collaborate with Bliss Kid Yoga. Bliss Kid Yoga is a nonprofit dedicated to providing yoga programs for children, families and educators in order to help nurture physical and emotional health within the community. with a local nonprofit public charity. As you probably know, I specialized in care of dementia patients as a nurse practitioner an now as a photographer. But kids and yoga you ask? Well, YES! I read about this incredible organization, their mission and LOVED it. I contacted the Executive Director and Founder, Katherine Banker and offered my services. I met her at one of their local events, the Austin Earth Festival April 23, 2016 and knew I made a good choice.
Yoga is translated as union. Union of mind, body and spirit. It is a moving meditation designed to awaken our blissful nature. Yoga unites the inner and outer you through movements guided by breath, the practice of meditation and self-observance without judgment.
Meditation and Photography have a lot in common. Yoga is a moving meditation designed to awaken our blissful nature. Photography and meditation require us to be in the present moment. Both require a high degree of awareness. Both are attainable when the mind is free from distracting, outside influences. Photography is an art medium that requires a quiet state of mind and patience. Interestingly, when I photograph nature or people, I'm lost in the present moment. I forget about the worries of the day and the aches and pains. Good photographers are truly grounded in the moment. It is in this state that those 'goosebump' moments (brush with the divine) happen. I'll have more blogs about these interesting topics.
Adults have been practicing yoga for thousands of years as a way to reduce stress, improve physical and mental wellness, learn healthy habits, and live a more mindful life. In recent years, yoga has gained attention and perhaps because at it’s core, yoga simply helps you live a more healthy and happy life. Today’s youth is faced with more pressure to succeed than ever. These expectations are creating arguably the most stressed generation in recent history. This is why sharing the joy and benefits of yoga with today’s youth is so crucial. The mission of Bliss Kid Yoga is to nurture physical and emotional health within the community. By supporting programs like Bliss Kid Yoga you can give children the tools to help set the foundation for a happy and healthy life. I’m delighted to support them with my art-photography.
Classes at Bliss Kid Yoga are designed to nurture a child’s innate bliss by engaging mind, body and spirit. They cohesively combine all of the following elements with story-telling and music to provide a playful and creative approach to yoga in a comfortable and safe environment. Classes are currently offered to Preschool and Elementary age children. Check them out and while you're there, see how you might help them continue to succeed!
This was my probably my 10th visit to the Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown, TX. Yes, it's getting bigger and better every year! Here's a little video of some of the experience. You might notice how crowded it was at some times!
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to photograph beautiful and bright professional models at Precision Camera University. This is a wonderful annual event put on by Precision Camera.
This beautiful girl is Sharmita Bhattacharya. She is an actress, model and dancer. I wrote about Goose-Bump Moments in a previous blog, but it’s worth repeating because I sure had a few of those working with Sharmita.
I am often asked if it is more fun or easier to photograph models than 'regular' people. The truth is, while they may be easier to model and direct, the excitement of getting that GOOSE-BUMP MOMENT with the perfect shot is the same with any subject.
A goose-bump moment for me is when I know I captured that perfect image capturing the essence of my subject. To be honest, it is usually between the perfectly posed shots when the real expressions come out. It's a sense of a brush with the divine- that perfect moment in time. We all feel it! If my makeup artist is there, he feels it. This is the shot that'll even sometimes bring the subject to tears-it's just that real. It's what I LIVE for!
Sharmita was fun and you can tell that we had a variety of different outfits, locations and best of all- expressions. I love all of these images, but the ones with the smile and joyful expressions are my absolute favorites. What you don’t know is that Sharmita is a real joy with a smile that just lights up the room. I hope that came through in the images!
Images/pictures are meant to make us FEEL something. Sharmita’s portraits are good examples of the different meanings our images carry-which is a future Blog Post, by the way. In the meantime, notice that each image provokes a different feeling and sends a different message. Messages are sent with the color of the image, whether the subject is looking at you or elsewhere, the expression, the lighting and so much more. Stay tuned for a future Blog. If you are a business person and searching for the right images for your website, tuning into how an image makes you feel (makes your potential clients feel) is VERY important. I meet my clients ahead of time to determine the message they want to send so we can achieve these goals. A pretty picture is so much more than just a pretty picture!
Sharmita was born and raised in the greater Houston area. Her draw to the arts started from a young age in the form of dance and music. She moved to Austin to study at the University of Texas at Austin, and it was there where she discovered her love for acting. She continued her education while testing her new found interest by dabbling with short films, introductory acting courses, and modeling gigs in her free time. Shortly after graduating, she furthering her career by studying the Meisner Technique under acting coach, Laurel Vouvray, and gaining representation with Collier Talent Agency. She continues to study under Laurel in her advanced scene study and character building class while taking workshops with other coaches to further expand her knowledge of the art.
Since graduating, Sharmita has been working hard to hone her craft, make connections, and attempt challenging roles, characters, and projects. Some of her notable opportunities to date have been co-starring in the ABC pilot episode of Shonda Rhime’s newest TV-series, The Catch, as well as playing the leading role in the narrative based music video for the popular pop punk band, The Wonder Years. She will also be heard in the videogame Shadow Warrior 2, as the voice of the leading girl character — Kamiko. Isn’t that cool?
Sharmita’s passion for acting and her love of experiencing new things, make her career a huge part of her life. She continues to grow from learning about her different characters, hearing the stories of the people around her, and relating with the strong energy of motivated people in the arts. She loves what she does and enjoys being inspired by the people around her.
My husband and I attended Earth Day Festival in Austin, TX 2016. Mueller Park is beautiful and a perfect place for this celebration. I had never been to the park and was just amazed at the oasis so close to home.
Did you know that the community is a redevelopment of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport into a mixed-use urban village in the heart of the city. It is a sustainable community that is meeting extensive goals in housing and economic development.
Mueller’s parks, trails and open space weave through the community, establishing a native, local ecosystem and bringing outdoor recreation and education options to Mueller residents, employees and neighbors. Twenty percent of the neighborhood is dedicated to parkland and open space. Isn't that cool? Austin IS a cool place to live!!
Click on this link to learn just how 'GREEN' the Mueller community is. It is amazing!
Here's something else I didn't know about the area: The Thinkery! That'll be a whole new post though. Very cool! Who doesn't love a place that has big pigs to welcome you?
I was honored to be present, celebrate AND take pictures at Autumn Leaves Northwest Austin's First Anniversary party! The theme was Parisian with music, beautiful art, exquisite food, new and old friends and a lot of LOVE! I'm not just throwing that word around...the LOVE was palpable. I enjoyed meeting families and staff members as well as people from the senior care community of Austin. How WONDERFUL to see familiar faces!
Considering memory care is a very difficult decision. There are so many factors and by the time families decide that it is best for their loved one, they've been through SO MUCH heartache. With that being said, I heard over and over how much peace of mind they have knowing their loved one is cared for in a safe and loving environment. So much can be said for choosing the best living arrangements and perhaps that'll be for a future blog post.
Many of you know that I've been a nurse for 37 years and NP for 16 of those. I still can't believe it has been that long! Nurses know how to listen and connect, and this has certainly helped me in my photography career. Many of my years as a nurse and nurse practitioner were spent in care of the elderly and helping them to manage life with dementia. I'm completing a book telling the love stories of these beautiful families in both photos and written word. Watch for that October 2016! If you would consider contributing by sharing your own love story, please contact me.
