2017 with Carmen Buck Photography
How do I celebrate and honor those who mean so much to me, my business Carmen Buck Photography and the wonderful art created?
The Legacy We Leave- Billie is an amazing woman who taught her daughter the power of loyalty in both health and illness. You'll be drawn to the love in this story about Billie and her daughter Laura. Their story is highlighted in my upcoming book Love Still Lives Here (Fall 2017) and the topic of this blog post. Tuesday Tell All with Carmen Buck Photography: The Beauty of a Woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair.
The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is a doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.
True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.
Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers and especially to my own wonderful mother!
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to photograph beautiful and bright professional models at Precision Camera University. This is a wonderful annual event put on by Precision Camera.
This beautiful girl is Sharmita Bhattacharya. She is an actress, model and dancer. I wrote about Goose-Bump Moments in a previous blog, but it’s worth repeating because I sure had a few of those working with Sharmita.
I am often asked if it is more fun or easier to photograph models than 'regular' people. The truth is, while they may be easier to model and direct, the excitement of getting that GOOSE-BUMP MOMENT with the perfect shot is the same with any subject.
A goose-bump moment for me is when I know I captured that perfect image capturing the essence of my subject. To be honest, it is usually between the perfectly posed shots when the real expressions come out. It's a sense of a brush with the divine- that perfect moment in time. We all feel it! If my makeup artist is there, he feels it. This is the shot that'll even sometimes bring the subject to tears-it's just that real. It's what I LIVE for!
Sharmita was fun and you can tell that we had a variety of different outfits, locations and best of all- expressions. I love all of these images, but the ones with the smile and joyful expressions are my absolute favorites. What you don’t know is that Sharmita is a real joy with a smile that just lights up the room. I hope that came through in the images!
Images/pictures are meant to make us FEEL something. Sharmita’s portraits are good examples of the different meanings our images carry-which is a future Blog Post, by the way. In the meantime, notice that each image provokes a different feeling and sends a different message. Messages are sent with the color of the image, whether the subject is looking at you or elsewhere, the expression, the lighting and so much more. Stay tuned for a future Blog. If you are a business person and searching for the right images for your website, tuning into how an image makes you feel (makes your potential clients feel) is VERY important. I meet my clients ahead of time to determine the message they want to send so we can achieve these goals. A pretty picture is so much more than just a pretty picture!
Sharmita was born and raised in the greater Houston area. Her draw to the arts started from a young age in the form of dance and music. She moved to Austin to study at the University of Texas at Austin, and it was there where she discovered her love for acting. She continued her education while testing her new found interest by dabbling with short films, introductory acting courses, and modeling gigs in her free time. Shortly after graduating, she furthering her career by studying the Meisner Technique under acting coach, Laurel Vouvray, and gaining representation with Collier Talent Agency. She continues to study under Laurel in her advanced scene study and character building class while taking workshops with other coaches to further expand her knowledge of the art.
Since graduating, Sharmita has been working hard to hone her craft, make connections, and attempt challenging roles, characters, and projects. Some of her notable opportunities to date have been co-starring in the ABC pilot episode of Shonda Rhime’s newest TV-series, The Catch, as well as playing the leading role in the narrative based music video for the popular pop punk band, The Wonder Years. She will also be heard in the videogame Shadow Warrior 2, as the voice of the leading girl character — Kamiko. Isn’t that cool?
Sharmita’s passion for acting and her love of experiencing new things, make her career a huge part of her life. She continues to grow from learning about her different characters, hearing the stories of the people around her, and relating with the strong energy of motivated people in the arts. She loves what she does and enjoys being inspired by the people around her.

There are many qualities to a 'good' professional model. A few I look for: Can they follow my direction well? That's not to say that they don't follow directions well- it's to say that they understand MY directions. We all direct a little differently, and power to them for figuring out what is going on in a creative mind! It goes like this: turn a little more that way? This way- no that way... not that much... now look that way-no don't move your head, just your eyes and can you tilt your shoulders a little...no a little the other way... no I don't like that-let's see. Maybe we should start over. WHEW! Not an easy task! Nate and the other models did this ALL day for 3 days with 15 photographers at a time. Another good quality in a professional model- can they laugh with me? I do quirky things and entertain myself. Laughter and having fun is essential. Life is too short to not have fun.
Nate maintained a smile the whole time-even after making him scream for what seemed like about 2 hours.
My first experience working as a male model at Precision Camera University was a surreal opportunity and I look forward to participating in future events for PCU. I am very fortunate I was hand selected by Tani James because I had the distinct privilege of meeting many talented photographers, make-up-artists, models, and instructors at the Inn of The Hills hotel (Kerrville Texas). I strongly recommend anyone who is thinking about coming to a PCU event next year, to stop thinking about it and just do it because your have fun and learn many valuable lessons with fantastic group of people "The Galaxy is the Limit"

Gifts come in many forms- items, trinkets, words and even thoughts and prayers. When I decided to start my photography studio, my friend Marcy gifted me a few antique chairs that had been in her family for generations. As if that wasn't special enough, she and her daughters also wrote a beautiful blessing that I keep framed in my studio. I read it everyday as a reminder that I AM Blessed.
These are the things that make life sweet. It's in the moments. It's when you know someone is thinking about you and really rallying for your success. It's love.
In honor of Marcy and Mother's Day, we did our photoshoot with her mother Sandy, and daughter and we had a BLAST! We did an indoor shoot and an outdoor shoot because, well, they're just that special to me. They, in return, allowed me to use the images, including the behind the scenes images for my blog and marketing. You'll see the full blog post 3/18/16. There is also a sweet video that might make you cry. In fact, there are two different videos because I wanted to show more behind the scenes fun. Life is just too short to not have FUN! The videos are short- I know we are all busy!
Do you like the videos of the shoots? I often do a little video footage along with the still photos for my photoshoots. It's a wonderful combination of behind the scenes personalities that don't always show in photos along with the beautiful photos. You can have that too! You can see more here.
For today, I say THANK YOU! to Marcy and all who have supported me in my portrait photography work and studio, the photo/documentary about dementia I work so hard on and all that goes with this! Let's celebrate good friends, love and yes...BEAUTY EVERYWHERE!
Makeup/Hair by Duane Sevelin Cosmetics and assistant for the day for Vanessa Copp. Hey, we sure had fun didn't we???? Show some love and leave a comment for Marcy!
This is beautiful Eleya Maureen who modeled for one of the workshops at Precision Camera University. This is an annual event where photographers from all different levels get together and learn from one another AND from experts from around the country. It was amazing!
One of the really nice things about the week-end is that we meet professionals (hair, makeup artists, models and other photogs) in a non-stressful atmosphere. In fact, people get to know one another and music gets going, beer and wine start to flow and things get wonderfully rowdy. Our models work hard. They stand in heels and pose for 15 photographers or more as we go from location to location. I met several young, beautiful and multi-talented models and I'll highlight a few of them in my blog over the next few weeks. They're definitely appreciated! Eleya Maureen deserves a big round of applause and some SUPER NICE COMMENTS BELOW!
Eleya Maureen is such an incredible young woman, I thought I had better tell you about her! She has been a model for the past 10 years and been to 100's of photography workshops all over the world. We were so lucky to have her for PCU2016!
About a year ago, she decided to give a try at being behind the camera! She's comfortable in front of and behind the camera! What you might not realize is that while the photography mentors guide the workshop attendees, the models are often on the sidelines waiting. This smart girl took the opportunity to LEARN!
Three years ago she and her partner Greg Griffin launched Models and Cameras. They gather models, come up with awesome locations, find hair and makeup teams and even stylists to help with wardrobe. Doesn't that sound INCREDIBLE? Some of these even end up being 1:1 which is something photographers LOVE. Thank goodness for MeetUp- look for them here in TX and here in Colorado.
Please leave some sweet words of encouragement for Eleya Maureen.
We had a wonderful time shooting this session. We shot some beautiful girl next door shots in white linen with little makeup and lots of wavy loose hair. (That one coming soon!) Then we did some fun ones with balloons. We got into Old Hollywood Glam mode and oohhlaalaa. Our friend and model, Billie Jean Bachmann totally rocket this. Our makeup and hair ARTIST is L Duane Sevelin. He has his own line of cosmetics as well as other fun things he does. You can't help but recognize what a HUGE difference a team effort makes.
You don't have to be a model to have a photoshoot. Nope- you just have to be willing, be open to try something new perhaps and surrender over your experience to have fun and experience your true beauty. Duane and I help with styling and he brings out your best with hair and makeup. I bring out the best in posing and our interaction. It's MAGIC.
Call and schedule your special photo shoot. We are open to something new and fun- inside, outside, themed, not themed....you name it. We artist types love this, you know?
Leave me a comment and share the love with the team! We read them and respond.
Mother's Day is the time in May where we often wonder what to do for our Moms, wives, sisters, friends and special mothers we know. We want to give some thing of value that lasts. Often we'll take them out somewhere special because those memories last. We may not remember details, but we'll remember how we felt with those we love...for a little while.
My favorite gifts always involve photos. You might expect that given my profession, BUT I've given beautifully housed images in frames, on canvas and so on... Why? They remind us of feelings and they remind us EVERY TIME we look at the photo. What could be better!
Why not give the gift of images AND a day of pampering with a unique experience to the woman or women you love. The photoshoots are fun and can include full hair and makeup and styling. Here is an example of 3 generations in a shoot.
This video tells you about Marcy and her mother Sandy and her daughter Taylor. Marcy is one of the hardest working people I know and totally deserved some pampering fun. Marcy told me that she had no formal pictures with her with her mother. I love photographing multiple age groups and women of a 'certain age.' Heck, I'm a 'woman of a certain age.' Aren't they beautiful?

I believe a photo shoot should be fun. Life is too short to not have a great time!
So what happens when you take a funny, talented makeup and hair artist, a cute and gorgeous model and a tireless dreamer of a photographer? FUN! We took these little shots at the end of the day AFTER a full day of clean and natural looks, contemporary Old Hollywood glamour images, and even some outside in white linen shots. You'll see those soon but for now- enjoy!

This is Mary. Mary is SO beautiful-even before we started playing dress up. We all have a story that begins with a difficult, challenging time and ends with us being stronger, smarter and dare I say- even more beautiful inside and out than ever before. Part of Mary's story now includes a day of pampering with professional hair and makeup by Laurie Payne, and then styling and photoshoot with me.
Isn't Mary gorgeous? Let her know! Comment, share and post because you know what? We all need that reinforcement that reminds us that beauty begins on the inside and then shines through in our eyes, our smile and how we treat one another. Mary- you GOT it. The LOVE shines through. Thanks for coming to play. Remember, the journey to your happy place can be an incredibly beautiful trip!
You all might know that I might wait all day to get those 'goosebump' moments in a photoshoot. Watch the video to witness all kinds of goosebump moments!
Jodi is a successful business owner, empath and the kind of person you want to hang out with all the time. She asked for a few images she could use for her business website but to also have some other beautiful images. She described images with a blend of feminine and masculine. Hmmm I said, ' Okay- help me with that one. Tell me more.' I mean we all have a good mix of masculine and feminine whether we're male or female, right? We looked through pictures she liked for inspiration and I decided to give her a 'feminine/masculine' photoshoot with a Carmen twist. Add a taste of pure sweetness, a little character lighting, clothes with a masculine/feminine touch, and make sure makeup is soft and pretty but not too girly- girl and we get magic! Ah, I think (I prayed!) I got the gist. Result: She was happy! I sweat it out until the day of our reveal though. I want my clients to jump with joy or cry with joy when they see their images. SUCCESS today! Isn't she gorgeous? Headshots- check. Glamour Goddess with an edge and blend of masculine (dark, straight lines, bold jewelry, no frill) and feminine (soft makeup, white furry chair and fainting couch)- CHECK! We're all doing a happy dance.
What would your perfect portrait session look like? Give me a call so we can talk about it. The options are endless and can be so much fun-from the very basic to Hollywood starlet to Bollywood starlet, to sweet to sexy to ethereal and fantasy to very grounded in reality. What could be so much fun!! It's my job to help you settle into your 'look' and make it work for you. Clothes, lights, hair and makeup and most importantly a fun, open attitude lead to success. Oh, and sometimes we drink wine. That sure helps to get the creative juices flowing!
Be sure and follow me on Facebook (like my page, Carmen Buck Photography), Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Vimeo.
Thanks to Madame MUA for hair and makeup.
A few days ago this beautiful young woman came in for a photo shoot having no idea what to expect but delighted to have the experience anyway. What a beautiful spirit. Sonia is a personal trainer (No Excuses) in Round Rock Texas. A few years ago she started over leaving the material goodies she spent years accumulating behind. She moved herself from California to Texas with faith and the inner knowing that she MUST do this and that things would work out. Did they work out for her? That's a big YES! Her optimism and joy are palpable and contagious. What a FUN and inspiring photo shoot we had! Enjoy the slide show and tell us what you think!
The Promise I make to my photography clients: I will witness and capture that inner light we all have-even when they don't see it themselves. Whew! That's a big promise but the very reason my profession is so darned fulfilling. I honestly have a bit of anxiety thinking of the responsibility and then it always just happens. With Sonia it was easy. We share that faith and inner knowing that it'll all be alright AND we'll sure have fun while we are at it. Thank you Sonia!
While I'm thanking special people, I need to acknowledge Duane Sevelin with Sevelin Cosmetics (Sevelin.com). Duane is kind, talented and fast (thank you!) at his art of hair and makeup. Great job!
Can I just say...BEAUTIFUL!!! Kasey is beautiful on the inside and out and a total natural at it! Here's a little photography secret: We work hard to make our posing look natural. It's so much fun to catch candid shots, but the real tricks are to help you guys feel comfortable and then give a few guidelines and capture the magic! Kasey is an absolute NATURAL. Dear Kasey- remember me when you get famous, sweetheart. What an honor to capture your beauty! She had a blast with hair and makeup and her grandmother who treated her to this wonderful pampering experience.
