Living well when someone we love has dementia: David and Joan contributed their story about living well with dementia to my book Love Still Lives Here about a year ago. Yesterday, nearly one year after my original blog about them (3/14/17!) I spent the afternoon visiting with Joan and their son Kristan who had very interesting insight from the adult child's perspective. Enjoy!Read More
Tuesday Tell All with Carmen Buck Photography: The Beauty of a Woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair.
The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is a doorway to her heart, the place where love resides.
True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.
And this is truly where the story begins...Read More
So, I set out to do a family photo session this week-end. It wasn't your typical family photo session because it involved a pig named Daisy and 2 lovely, furry bunnies. I knew the Cavanaugh family was special, but what I didn't know was that I would get to experience an absolutely genuinely fun, beautiful family too! We did the Family session at their home because, well frankly, how do you take a pig on a field trip? Plus, pictures in the privacy and intimacy of your own home carry special meaning. These pics were taken between the moments with Daisy. Good luck getting a pig to pose, but stay tuned...
Meet the Cavanaugh Family
Family Lifestyle Portraits
I've talked about 'lifestyle photography' before, and this is an example of that kind of a shoot. Some of the shoot was posed, but the expressions were priceless and all their own. I captured some moments between the moments and got those goosebumps (brush with the divine) that I yearn for. When I get goosebumps, I know I'm in the midst of something truly special. So I was!
Family Photo Sessions- What Moments Matter the Most?
What moments matter the most? Those moments between the moments where the personalities shine through. I've found that the still images are incredible for this and to even add more BAM, I create a video/slide show. The video portions are quick snippets but they capture some of the movement and love that still images simply cannot. It's a blend of the best of two worlds. Add music and you've got memories that go on and on. My husband Tim Buck was kind enough to get some video footage for me so this video is definitely a behind the scenes because it shows a little bit of me. It is a memory of a wonderful afternoon family photo session for the Cavanaugh family and for me! It might be the best part, so be sure and take a look and leave a comment for this beautiful family! Oh and PS- Daisy was relatively cooperative, sweet and you'll just have to see for yourself how the posing went...
Pedernales Falls State Park- Hill Country Texas-Video
My husband and I headed to Pedernales Falls State Park and it was beautiful! We've had some rainy weather so the water was flowing. We climbed rocks, enjoyed some wild flowers and my husband enjoyed his Personal Portrait Assistive Device (AKA-Selfie Stick).
It's important to capture some memories and find a good way to save them. Taking pics on your phone is not a bad thing and there are some nifty lenses you can get to add to your smart phone. Be sure and keep them in a safe manner. It would be a shame to lose those happy memories.
My Favorite Behind the Scenes of 3 Generations of Beauty!
Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers and especially to my own wonderful mother!
April 2016- Getting Bigger and Bigger Every Year!
This was my probably my 10th visit to the Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown, TX. Yes, it's getting bigger and better every year! Here's a little video of some of the experience. You might notice how crowded it was at some times!
Earth Day ATX Video
My husband and I attended Earth Day Festival in Austin, TX 2016. Mueller Park is beautiful and a perfect place for this celebration. I had never been to the park and was just amazed at the oasis so close to home.
Did you know that the community is a redevelopment of the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport into a mixed-use urban village in the heart of the city. It is a sustainable community that is meeting extensive goals in housing and economic development.
Mueller’s parks, trails and open space weave through the community, establishing a native, local ecosystem and bringing outdoor recreation and education options to Mueller residents, employees and neighbors. Twenty percent of the neighborhood is dedicated to parkland and open space. Isn't that cool? Austin IS a cool place to live!!
Earth Day Festival was at Lake Park within the Mueller Community.
Click on this link to learn just how 'GREEN' the Mueller community is. It is amazing!
- Open air amphitheater and stage
- Interactive playscape
- Picnic peninsula
- Loop trail
- Jogger stretching area
- Public art
Here's something else I didn't know about the area: The Thinkery! That'll be a whole new post though. Very cool! Who doesn't love a place that has big pigs to welcome you?
Autumn Leaves NW Austin 1st Anniversary Celebration
I was honored to be present, celebrate AND take pictures at Autumn Leaves Northwest Austin's First Anniversary party! The theme was Parisian with music, beautiful art, exquisite food, new and old friends and a lot of LOVE! I'm not just throwing that word around...the LOVE was palpable. I enjoyed meeting families and staff members as well as people from the senior care community of Austin. How WONDERFUL to see familiar faces!
Considering memory care is a very difficult decision. There are so many factors and by the time families decide that it is best for their loved one, they've been through SO MUCH heartache. With that being said, I heard over and over how much peace of mind they have knowing their loved one is cared for in a safe and loving environment. So much can be said for choosing the best living arrangements and perhaps that'll be for a future blog post.
Many of you know that I've been a nurse for 37 years and NP for 16 of those. I still can't believe it has been that long! Nurses know how to listen and connect, and this has certainly helped me in my photography career. Many of my years as a nurse and nurse practitioner were spent in care of the elderly and helping them to manage life with dementia. I'm completing a book telling the love stories of these beautiful families in both photos and written word. Watch for that October 2016! If you would consider contributing by sharing your own love story, please contact me.
Autumn Leaves Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Assisted Living Communities are leaders in providing specialized memory care in a home-like environment. They incorporate practices that are specifically designed for individuals living with memory impairment. There are several Autumn Leaves Memory Cares in TX and 7 other states.
Thank you for allowing me to capture some memories for you and your families!
Show some LOVE and leave a comment for the families and residents!
The Professional Women of Williamson County (PWOW) celebrated their 9th Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 20, 2016. I'm a new member and was blessed to take some photographs of this wonderful event.
Our mission is to provide an environment for professional women to be educated, encouraged and empowered.
Four scholarships were awarded to incredible young women. After some time to visit and have a nice meal, Lorrie Westberry, President of PWOW, opened the award portion of our luncheon. Susanna Boyer, chair of the scholarship committee, told us about the amazing young women who were awarded scholarships for their college educations. Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott presented each with their certificates. I have to say that Mrs. Abbott is warm, kind and engaging. The pictures are evidence of the spirit of the day- lots of smiles, some tears and plenty of hugs and love to go around! Thank you Mrs. Abbott for taking the time to stay and pose for a picture with all of us! I'll treasure mine.
And the Winners Are...
Celine Morshed of Stony Point High School in Round Rock was awarded the $1500 Nancy Hampton Memorial Scholarship. Nancy's daughter came from Houston area to be present for this. We shared a table and there wasn't a dry eye when Susanna Boyer talked about Nancy and proudly awarded the scholarship in her name. Congratulations Celine!
Karen Rativa of East View High School in Georgetown was awarded a $1000 scholarship. Congratulations Karen!
Devrie Duncan of Liberty Hill High School was awarded a $1000 scholarship for her college education. Congratulations Devrie!
Danielle Christine Buzzard was also awarded a $1000 scholarship. Danielle goes to Round Rock High School. Congratulations Danielle!
PWOW started as a small group of women dedicated to educating, empowering and meeting others around the county. Now, we’ve had outreach projects, shared countless meals, seen members come and go as they advanced in their careers and learned life lessons from one another. Knowledge is power and we hope to build up more professional women as the organization continues to evolve. Times are changing around us at incredible speed, and we will equip you to achieve your goals and dreams.
Our beautiful niece is getting married. I was fortunate enough to take her bridal portraits. Here are a few. These were taken at Carleen Bright Arboretum in Woodway, TX near Waco.
Show some LOVE and leave her some nice comments. She and Bobby are getting married June 11, 2016.
I recently attended a 3 day photography workshop hosted by Precision Camera (Precision Camera University 2016!) It was wonderful! I learned about business management and photography skills and even photoshop fun stuff. I met some wonderful people also. Not only that, it was set at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville TX.
It's Spring and that means....WILDFLOWER SEASON in Central Texas. I live almost 3 hours away from Kerrville and since we got out at 6pm, I decided to stay one more night, get up early and take some most excellent photos of wildflowers and other beautiful scenery of the Hill Country.
When everyone else left and I was hanging around the hotel by myself, I had mixed feelings about my decision. It's an eerie feeling. I've been counting my steps on my fitbit and opted to go for a walk. After 45 minutes of a brisk walk, I raced back to grab my camera and caught some beautiful early evening shots. I made a little video and hope it captures the beauty!
What about those WILDFLOWERS? Stay tuned- that blog post is coming up soon! They were BEAUTIFUL!! Here's a teaser-
We had so much fun photographing and video taping this family, that we opted to do a few more with their horses. The girls love the horses and so- why not? I'm so glad we did because it was probably the highlight of the session.
You can have your family photos uniquely yours also. This family opted to have video with some behind the scenes along with their portrait images. These images will mean more and more to them with each passing year.
Family sessions begin at $200 for sitting fee.
Don't wait to get your family photos done!
Because there's always MORE to the story...here's a little video/slideshow with some behind the scenes.
You'll feel the love and joy in this family. I've started integrating a little behind the scenes video and love capturing some of the fun between the poses. What happens next? This family has beautiful portraits that will mean more to them with each passing year. They have beautiful images to hang on the walls and desks. They also have a meaningful portrait video showing things that still images miss. It's easy to share with their friends and families. PERFECTION! You can get yours, also. Call 512-920-2825 to schedule.
We had a wonderful time shooting this session. We shot some beautiful girl next door shots in white linen with little makeup and lots of wavy loose hair. (That one coming soon!) Then we did some fun ones with balloons. We got into Old Hollywood Glam mode and oohhlaalaa. Our friend and model, Billie Jean Bachmann totally rocket this. Our makeup and hair ARTIST is L Duane Sevelin. He has his own line of cosmetics as well as other fun things he does. You can't help but recognize what a HUGE difference a team effort makes.
You don't have to be a model to have a photoshoot. Nope- you just have to be willing, be open to try something new perhaps and surrender over your experience to have fun and experience your true beauty. Duane and I help with styling and he brings out your best with hair and makeup. I bring out the best in posing and our interaction. It's MAGIC.
Call and schedule your special photo shoot. We are open to something new and fun- inside, outside, themed, not themed....you name it. We artist types love this, you know?
Leave me a comment and share the love with the team! We read them and respond.
I work real hard, but I really enjoy my walks with the dogs. Today was Sparky's day and he likes it when I take him with me. One of the joys of working from home is that I get to carve out some time for a little doggy attention. He's just pure joy! This one is just for fun-short and sweet.
