The delivery of portraits is always special for me, but today was even more special. Gracetta has dementia, but knows LOVE when she sees it. Pictures of her daughters and her beloved caregiver Sara lit her up from within. Yes, it was a very special day! (I shot this with my cell phone, but it really was too special to pass up!) Vashti Jude Delacruz and her sister Vidette Forbes contributed to my upcoming book Love Still Lives Here (with their beautiful mother, Gracetta, of course). I'm so grateful for the wonderful people who brighten my day.
We may mistakenly believe that dementia leaves our loved ones with consistent inability to recognize people or events. The truth is that there are days when recognition is brighter, and those days are glorious days! Gracetta experienced a few moments of understanding and recgonized the love of her daughters and caregiver Sara in the pictures. The look on her face and her few words, left us lit from within with Love. Gracetta recognized LOVE.
This beautiful family agreed to participate in my upcoming book, Love Still Lives Here which will be filled with stories of families who care for loved ones with dementia. Portraits will also be included. I delivered a few of the portraits taken for the book, and captured parts of our visit. This short video and still images are priceless to Vashti and other her sister Vidette. Gracetta's responses for those few short minutes become rich moments to cherish! I sit in absolute reverence for the honor to share, capture and be a part of these extraordinary occasions.
Vashti Jude, Gracetta's daughter showed her each of the 6 portraits and described where they might find frames and walls for the artwork. It was a beautiful exchange. As an artist, mother, and daughter, I was left with goose bumps knowing I was in the present of a divine moment. So much love in one room. I can not imagine a better 'job' for me!
